The School of Nursing at the University of Maryland is located in downtown Baltimore. Founded by Nightingale Fund graduate Louisa Parsons in the year 1889, the school dedicates itself to creating a research-intensive environment for students that serves to advance the science of nursing through both research and scholarships that are of superior quality.

The University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) is the largest school in the state and one of the largest across the country. On an annual basis, it enrolls as many as 1,800 students. U.S. News & World Report ranks UMSON seventh among all national nursing schools. The school’s strategic location in the Baltimore/ Washington, D.C. area is such that the opportunities for participation available to both students and faculty alike are unparalleled. These opportunities can be found in activities related to government, culture, science and policy.

The school of nursing at this institution of higher learning was the first to establish a nursing informatics Master’s and PhD programs the world over. The range of programs offered to students is vast. In terms of Baccalaureate programs, there is the BSN program, the RN-BSN program and the RN-BSN online program. The Master of Science program features nine master’s specialties. UMSON offers the only Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) master’s degree option in the state.

If you are ready to go further with your nursing studies, look to the Doctoral programs offered at this university. There is a PhD program as well as a DNP program. The school offers students 31 unique web-based courses that come with 68 total sections. There are also 75 unique web-enhanced courses that contain 110 complete sections.

The mission of the University of Maryland School of Nursing is to develop nursing leaders in the areas of education, practice and research. This is accomplished through the broad array of programs (baccalaureate, graduate and continuing education) made available to students who enroll at UMSON. It is done through innovative clinical enterprise and cutting-edge research and science.
