Nursing Scholarships

There’s never been a better time to become a nursing student. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), between 2008 and 2018, employment of RN’s (registered nurses, is expected to increase by up to 22 percent.

The BLS also reports that employment of LPN’s is expected to increase by 21 percent during the same time period. This is most likely due to the increasing number of elderly in need of long term care.

While nursing students may have a bit of a search locating employment in more rural areas, the majority of regions will provide excellent and immediate job opportunities, especially in industries like:

  • Doctor’s offices
  • Home health
  • Nursing homes
  • Employment services
  • Hospitals

Sounds promising doesn’t it? With an average salary of $62,450 for RNs and $39,030 for LPNs, flexible working hours, and  job security, who wouldn’t want to enter the field of nursing?

For many, the problem isn’t securing employment after school or even being accepted into a nursing program. Instead, it’s all about affording the cost of  nursing school.

Tuition for nursing school can vary greatly. According to College Surfing, two year community colleges may charge students an average of $75 per credit.

If the student decides to attend a private institution, however, the cost can be up to $500 a credit. Over four years, the difference between the cost of a private school and public school for nursing can be close to $75,000.

And tuition is not the only cost students have to face:

  • Textbooks can cost between $1,000 to $3,000.
  • Uniforms over the course of four years can cost between $150 and $300 dollars.
  • Lab fees average about $1,700 per term.
  • Enrollment fees can vary, ranging from $75 to $600.
