You have the opportunity to have an excellent career in South Dakota if you have decided to train to become a licensed practical nurse. First, you will need to locate an LPN training program that has been approved by the Board of Nursing. It is necessary to meet all admissions requirements before enrolling in a nursing program.

An LPN training program can last for up to two years. Many programs are only for about one year and include both classroom and clinical instruction. You will be provided with the training and skills you need to carry out duties in a variety of settings and under many different conditions.

Lake Area Technical Institute

Driving east on 3rd Avenue Northeast take the first right after Belmont Park (11th Street Northeast), you’ll find Lake Area Technical College about 300m due south. The PN program at Lake Area Technical College is an 11-month course that provides high standard nursing education to the students and prepares them to give effective care to pediatric, obstetric, medical, surgical, psychiatric, and geriatric patients. After completing the first eleven months the students may write the NCLEX-PN exams or continue their education for one more year for the NCLEX-RN exams.

Mount Marty College

Mount Marty College is located near the intersection of West 8th Street and Summit Street right next to the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. The Practical Nursing program at Mount Marty College is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need in order to fit into entry-level nursing positions in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, and home heath care agencies. The program doesn’t only prepare the graduates to deliver safe and effective nursing care, but also inculcates in the graduates the Benedictine Values of service and lifelong learning.

Sisseton Wahpeton College

Sisseton Wahpeton College is located right at the Southwest corner of Sisseton. To get there take Hickory Street West to 457th Avenue, the college is located some 300m due south. The Nursing program at Sisseton Wahpeton College is a 1-year certificate course which is specifically designed for students that want to spend just one year in learning skills towards a rewarding lifelong career. All credits earned in the PN program can be applied towards the associate of Applied Science degree at Sisseton Wahpeton College or other colleges and universities in the United States.

Southeast Technical Institute

Southeast Technical College is located on North Career Avenue right between West Benson Road and County Highway 140. The practical nursing program at Southeast Technical Institute can be taken as a full-time, 4-semester, 45 credit hour course or an evening, 5-semester, 51 credit hour program. In both options clinical placement is not a matter of routine curriculum like PN programs elsewhere, but is determined only after the student proves that he or she can safely and consistently perform all required procedures in specified time frames.

Western Dakota Technical Institute

Driving due east either on Highway 44 or East Central Street, lookout for Mickelson Drive on your right. Western Dakota Technical Institute is located right at the end of Mickelson Drive. The LPN program at Western Dakota Technical Institute is a 43 credit hour course that places great emphasis on the importance of clinical experience and provides the students with 650-700 clinical hours of actual hands-on clinical training under reputed physicians and registered nurses. After completion of the program, the students are eligible to write the NCLEX-PN exams.
