According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, there are currently less than 100 gerontological nursing programs offered in the U.S. As gerontology remains the interest of the few, many smaller states do not have any geriatric nursing programs available at all. The best state from which to get your geriatric nursing degree is New York, with six schools offering programs with this focus. While one of the largest states, California, has only one school offering this degree (Brandman University), Iowa has a choice of four schools.

Keep in mind that the below schools have specific programs focusing on geriatric nursing, but you can become a geriatric nurse in all the other nursing schools as well. You need to get your Nursing Diploma, Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and pass the NCLEX-RN exam. Once you have passed the exam and have worked in a clinical setting for at least for two years (with at least 2000 hours in geriatrics and 30 hours of CE in gerontological nursing), you can get your Gerontological Nursing Certification from ANCC.
