As of May 2019, the state of New York has the second-highest concentration of nursing assistants in the nation. There are 98,040 people that work in this city and region. In addition, the state has one of the highest wages for nursing assistants in the country. A typical yearly mean pay of $34,300 per year, or an hourly mean income of $16.49, is possible for them.

There are 974,542 people living in Westchester County, which makes it one of several counties in the region that are seeing a rise in job possibilities. Nursing assistants are a terrific way to get started in a career, and Yonkers is the biggest city in terms of population for this profession.

Quality CNA training is essential if you want to make a career change, but it will take time and work to reap the benefits of your chosen profession. Yonkers has a variety of resources for this purpose, including big educational institutions and smaller training organizations.

Family Service Society of Yonkers

Family Service Society of Yonkers

All communities may benefit from a higher quality of life advocated by the Family Service Society of Yonkers. Human services programs such as home health care, parenting, and social service are some of the tools they use to do this.

FSSY was created in 1883 as a non-profit organization. It primarily assists Westchester County’s handicapped and elderly populations via partnerships with public and private sector organizations. In addition to immediately benefiting their own employees, they also provide training to those they serve.

There are special training courses for personal care assistants and home health care workers that cater to the requirements of the elderly. The New York State Department of Health has authorized both programs. Students learn both the theory and the practice of providing in-home care. Additionally, students are prepared to work in a genuine home care environment under the direction of a certified nurse. The PCA/HHA certification test may be taken by those who have completed the course.

There are always free PCA/HHA courses accessible. The VIVE School on Riverdale Avenue in Yonkers is now offering classes. To be eligible for these courses, applicants must be a minimum of eighteen years old.

Within the agency, there are several employment options for recent grads. As a companion or an escort, graduates of FSSY may seek positions and support patients in their daily routines.

Inquiries may be made via phone (914-963-5118) or email (ahigley@fssy.org).

T&J Nursing Assistant Training School

T&J Nursing Assistant Training School

Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Home Health Aide, and Certified Personal Care Aide certifications are all available via Mount Vernon T&J Nursing Assistant Training School, which is state-approved.

The Nursing Assistant course teaches students about the duties and responsibilities of nurses, human body parts, cleanliness, vital signs, patient monitoring, safety, and emergency procedures. A patient’s ambulation abilities, such as how far they can walk to a bed, are also included. Finally, it aids in the development of communication and care skills for persons with mental illness.

Every day, evening, and weekend lessons are available as part of the six- to ten-week curriculum. If you don’t already have a high school diploma or GED certificate, you’ll need to get one before applying. A background check, physical exam, proof of immunizations, a drug test, and a TB skin test are also required for students applying to your institution.

You may reach them at any time with questions or concerns. Fill out a contact form on their website or give them a call at (914-668-1413).

Cochran School of Nursing at St. John’s Riverside Hospital

The Cochran School of Nursing was established in 1894, making it the region’s first hospital-based nursing school. An affiliate of St. Johns Riverside Hospital, it is mostly noted for its work with patients. It has been approved by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing and registered with the New York State Education Department.

The Nurse Aide course at the university teaches students the skills they’ll need to get a career in the field. Workplace skills are developed via a mix of classroom instruction and hands-on training experiences. Human anatomy, cleanliness, duties and responsibilities, patient safety and confidentiality, and infection control are just some of the issues that have been brought up throughout the course of the meeting. Long-term care facilities provide the opportunity for students to complete an externship.

In 2011, the first announcement was made of a certification program for nursing assistants. The training is held at the hospital’s Andrus Pavilion on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for seven weeks. Included in this price are the textbook and other materials.

To find out whether Nurse Aide lessons are being offered and when they will begin, call the Cochran School of Nursing at (914) 964-4296 or Brenda Hartley at (914) 964-4274.

Westchester Community College

Westchester Community College

There are three Extension Centers in Yonkers: on Mall Walk, SUNY Westchester Education Opportunity Center (WEOC) on South Broadway, and Roosevelt High School on Tuckahoe Road.

In terms of student enrollment, Westchester Community College is one of the biggest in the United States. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education first acknowledged it in 1946, and it has been in existence ever since.

CNA/HHA courses and many more are offered at the WEOC’s Yonkers satellite campus. The New York State certification test and registration in the New York State Home Care Registry are the goals of this dual training program.

Medical language, bodily systems, and patient care are all addressed in the course. Taking care of patients who are unable to leave their homes or who are handicapped or old is also addressed in this section. If you are a healthcare professional who works with patients, this course is for you.

The WEOC offers free courses to anyone who satisfies the center’s economic and educational standards. TABE reading scores or a high school diploma are among the criteria. Make sure you submit all the relevant paperwork for any programs you’re interested in.

The physical exam is an extra $115. You must also submit to a background check, a drug test, and wear college-issued uniforms in order to be considered for a position at the university. Career-specific services and opportunities exist as well.

Make an appointment or take a tour of the SUNY Westchester Educational Opportunity Center by calling (914) 782-7080.

Big Apple Training

Big Apple Training is a primary care training institution located approximately 10 miles from Yonkers in White Plains. CNA, HHA, EKG, phlebotomy, medical coding and billing, physician assistant, and continuing education courses were offered by Big Apple for more than twenty years. The New York State Education Department has granted Big Apple Training a license to operate as a career training (proprietary) school.

It takes a total of 38 lectures and practical sessions to become a certified nursing assistant (CNA). High-quality professors lead classes that may be taken at any time of day or night. Patient care basics and state-mandated competencies are taught to students. A Prometric-approved testing facility is available at the institution for students to take the New York State Nurse Aide Examination after graduation.

There is no way for prospective students to register online; they must do it on-site at the school where they want to study. A high school degree or GED certificate, a government-issued ID with a photograph, and a deposit are all required. As long as prospective student passes a pre-registration evaluation, they are still eligible for admission. At the time of enrollment, a variety of health exams and background checks may be required in accordance with state regulations.

Payment options are available for all courses, and students are assured that tuition is cheap. Only government-issued ACCES-VR vouchers are recognized as a form of student financial help.

There is a job board on BigApple that may assist graduates in their hunt for employment. As a result, instructors care about their students’ long-term success and may provide advice on choosing a professional path.

Fill up the contact form on Big Apple Training’s website or by phone (914-437-7373).
