The Virginia Board of Nursing must approve a CNA training program before a person may work as a certified nursing assistant in the state of Virginia. There are a variety of colleges and universities providing a wide range of nursing programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

For a CNA program to be recognized by the state of Virginia, as well as by the federal Office of the Nurse Aide Registry (OBRA), it must fulfill both Virginia’s and OBRA’s criteria.

Candidates for Virginia’s CNA training programs must be at least eighteen years old, have earned a high school diploma or GED, and have no felony convictions on their record. In order to be eligible for the certification competence assessment, all applicants must complete a training program with a minimum of 120 hours of instruction, including 75 hours each of classroom and clinical instruction.

To become a certified nursing assistant in Virginia and begin working as a CNA, you must pass the nurse aide competency test or the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam (NNAAP exam).

Students must pass the state’s final test to graduate from high school, as required by federal law. Pearson Vue administers the two portions of the licensure examination. For the first part of the evaluation, a written exam is required, which measures one’s understanding of technical subjects. Those who pass the exam are added to the state’s list of nursing assistants.

As a CNA, you are eligible for certification via the National Association for Home Care (NAHC). The National League for Nursing (NLN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) are two examples of organizations that accredit nursing schools. Every two years, CNAs must renew their certification and demonstrate that they have been working for compensation during that time.

In Virginia, you may choose from more than a hundred schools where you can get your CNA certification. Here are a few of the ones we’ve looked at:

In order to become a certified nursing assistant, you will need to enroll in CNA training at this college.

Approximately every three months, a new CNA training class begins. Students must be at least 18 years old, have no criminal records, and be able to communicate well in English in order to be admitted to the school.

American Red Cross

American Red Cross – Greater Chesapeake Region

For more than a century, the American Red Cross has been training future nurses. Nurses, instructors, and long-term care sector professionals from around the United States have provided input into the program’s design, which runs for 4-8 weeks and adheres to the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA ’86).

In order to provide the degree of care that patients need, Red Cross CNA training was devised. Professional nurses supervise students as they study in a clinical setting. In many cases, the Red Cross Curriculum surpasses state requirements. There are two parts to this course. As part of their education, students will learn about good patient care via lectures and practical applications. Lessons are delivered orally, via the use of DVDs, role-playing, or in the laboratory.

In this course, students will learn skills that may be used in a variety of healthcare settings. As a consequence, a firm foundation of knowledge and healthy habits is built before further instruction is required.

This program teaches the skills necessary to become a valuable and adaptable employee by teaching CPR, first aid, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), as well as how to prevent infection, take vital signs, perform range-of-motion exercises, and maintain workplace safety standards. Students will also learn how to transition from student to employee by learning basic hygiene skills, such as how to wash and dress. As part of the curriculum, students learn how to cultivate strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as the art of caring in order to better serve patients in the healthcare industry.

Red Cross Criminal Background Check and Tuberculosis test are required for applicants. Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED or pass the exam for Adult Basic Education (TABE).

After passing the State Competency Test, students will get their CNA certification. Working at skilled nursing facilities, hospices, rehabilitation centers, mental health institutions, daycares for the elderly and private homes are just a few of the options available to nursing school graduates.
