The Virginia Board of Nursing must approve a CNA training program before a person may work as a certified nursing assistant in the state of Virginia. There are a variety of colleges and universities providing a wide range of nursing programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
For a CNA program to be recognized by the state of Virginia, as well as by the federal Office of the Nurse Aide Registry (OBRA), it must fulfill both Virginia’s and OBRA’s criteria.
Candidates for Virginia’s CNA training programs must be at least eighteen years old, have earned a high school diploma or GED, and have no felony convictions on their record. In order to be eligible for the certification competence assessment, all applicants must complete a training program with a minimum of 120 hours of instruction, including 75 hours each of classroom and clinical instruction.
To become a certified nursing assistant in Virginia and begin working as a CNA, you must pass the nurse aide competency test or the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam (NNAAP exam).
Students must pass the state’s final test to graduate from high school, as required by federal law. Pearson Vue administers the two portions of the licensure examination. For the first part of the evaluation, a written exam is required, which measures one’s understanding of technical subjects. Those who pass the exam are added to the state’s list of nursing assistants.
As a CNA, you are eligible for certification via the National Association for Home Care (NAHC). The National League for Nursing (NLN) and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) are two examples of organizations that accredit nursing schools. Every two years, CNAs must renew their certification and demonstrate that they have been working for compensation during that time.
In Virginia, you may choose from more than a hundred schools where you can get your CNA certification. Here are a few of the ones we’ve looked at:
