There are a number of schools and institutions providing CNA classes in Chicago. You just have to finish the entire CNA course and take the state certification exam before you can finally work in nursing homes, hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Northwestern Institute of Health and Technology

Several allied health training programs are offered by the Northwestern Institute of Health and Technology. This kind of program can be taken at daytime or nighttime, depending on the availability of the student. The entire CNA class is composed of 120 hours; 80 hours of which is for classroom lectures and the remaining 40 hours is for supervised clinical education. Students can learn several nursing skills like basic health care, infection control, vital signs taking, proper nutrition and even computer use.

Malcolm X College

Malcolm X College is a two-year college and a part of the City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) system. It is actually the first of the City Colleges as it was founded in 1911 as Crane Junior College. Malcolm X Collee is one of the major providers of health training in Chicago. The college also has state-of-the-art facilities including a virtual hospital for the School of Health Sciences.

Of all the colleges in the CCC system, only Malcolm X College offers a Basic Nursing Assistant (BNA) certificate program. The program is in preparation for the CNA state certification exam. The program has three components: classroom lecture, laboratory simulation, and clinical experience. The main focus of the program is the fundamentals of nursing and patient care. This may include the emotional and psychological aspects of patient care, nursing practices, multi-cultural care approach, and effective communication strategies. The program includes written assignments/tests and pre-conference and post-conference sessions during the clinical experience.

The program is for 8 credit hours. Prerequisites include an eligibility for English 100 and Math 98. Applicants can also ask consent from the Department Chairperson in order to attend the program. The application can be done online. You just need to have a valid email address to continue with the enrollment process in the City Colleges Student Portal.

The resident rate for 5 to 11-credit hour courses is $1,069. There are no additional fees. The tuition rate for out-of-district residents is $3,159 while out-of-state residents are charged $4,149 for courses with 5-11 credit hours.

Allied Healthcare and Training Center

The Allied Healthcare and Training Center is at the forefront of delivering healthcare services by training individuals to become clinicians. The training center provides tailored career training models to prepare students for employment from day one.

As the demand for healthcare workers rise, the Allied Healthcare and Training Center believes that short-term courses like Basic Nursing Assistant are a smart move for individuals who want to gain immediate job placements in the industry. The Basic Nurse Assistant (BNA) training program fits this goal.

The 120- hour program is divided into 80 hours of classroom lecture and 40 hours of supervised clinical experience in a nursing home facility. The program covers topics like fundamentals of healthcare, human anatomy and physiology, infection control, and other topics in the state-mandated training modules.

The 5-week program has a day to evening, and weekend class options. Theory classes meet Monday to Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Clinicals are on Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Interested applicants are required to be at least 16 years old. There is required documentation like a proof of high school completion (diploma or GED certificate), physical health exam result provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and criminal background check. English language and literacy competency are also required.

The tuition fee is $700 with an additional $200 for registration. There are additional fees and expenses including the ones required for background checks, uniforms, equipment and materials, textbooks, mandatory pre-exam review sessions, and the fees for the state certification exams.

Career Training Center of Chicago

The Career Training Center of Chicago (CTCC) specializes in Nursing Assistant training. CTCC’s Basic Nurse Assistant Training Program provides comprehensive knowledge on the theory and clinical skills necessary to meet the state requirement for CNAS.

The program will be for 120 clock hours. About 80 will be dedicated to theory while 40 hours will be spent on clinical experience in a nursing facility. The program is for four weeks but can be finished as early as four weeks (with perfect attendance). The class schedule is flexible with day, evening or weekend options. Theory day classes are on Tuesdays to Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Evening theory classes, on the other hand, are on Mondays to Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Clinicals are on Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There are also weekend theory classes based on demand.

Applicants are required to have at least eight grade level of education and are able to speak and understand English (there will be a reading and writing exam). Prospective students need to submit an application form and give consent for a criminal background check. A physical exam (with diagnostic and immunization test) is also required.

The tuition fee is $800. There are non-refundable fees for registration ($20) and laboratory use ($30). Students also need to pay $37 for the criminal background check and $65 for the state certification exam. The cost of equipment and supplies like textbook and uniform aren’t included in the tuition fee.

Chicago Community Learning Center

The Chicago Community Learning Center (CCLC) offers medical career training to individuals from different backgrounds and experience in the healthcare industry. The center ensures that graduates would have the necessary competencies to enter their chosen careers. Aside from the skills training, CCLC also assists students in developing study and test-taking techniques, workplace skills, and life skills in general.

The program length is eight weeks. Theory classes are for 100 contact hours while clinicals are for more than 40 hours. The program is approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The total cost of the program is about $1,635. The breakdown includes the $1,230 tuition fee, $25 for uniform, $100 for books, $200 for supplies, and $80 for the state certification. The center also offers free training programs for those who qualify. Requirements for these free training events include a valid ID/driver’s license, Social Security card, high school diploma/GED certificate, and birth certificate.

Chicago State University

The Chicago State University (CSU) is a public university that values intellectual development, diversity and lifelong learning among others values. CSU is committed not only to quality education and the success of its students but also in community development.

The Basic Nursing Aide program is offered under the university’s Division Continuing Education and Nontraditional Degree Programs. The program will be comprehensive and covers the necessary skills to prepare CNAs in working in different types of healthcare facilities whether it be a nursing home, hospice, hospital or a home health agency.

The program length is eight weeks (one fall or winter session) with new classes forming a month after the end of the last batch of classes.

The program fee is $1,200. Students that qualify for WIOA will receive tuition waivers.

Chicago’s Pulse

Chicago’s Pulse or Chicago’s Pulse CPR Training Inc. primarily offers first aid and CPR training. Other courses offered include ACLS, PALS, CNA, and a core instructor’s course. The courses are available and customized for individuals, public institutions, and corporations. The training center caters to Northern and Southern Chicago, some areas in Wisconsin and Indiana.

Chicago Pulse’s Basic Nursing Assistant program covers the following topics: roles of nursing assistants in long-term care, elderly care, effective communication techniques, medical terminology, safety procedures, infection control, body mechanics, mobility, personal care, hygiene, nutrition and elimination, Alzheimer’s, death and dying.

The program has 124 contact hours divided into 40 hours of classroom lecture, 40 hours of laboratory exercise, 40 hours of clinical experience, and four hours of the CPR for Health Care Provider certification course. Incurring three absences automatically means a failing grade.

Interested applicants need to be at least 17 years old. The admission requirements include a background check (completed at the center’s office), physical exam, TB test, and a Strep A test. The health tests are due before the first day of clinical experience.

The tuition fee is $895. There is a $100 non-refundable deposit fee. The background check costs $45, and the physical exams around $50. The state certification exam fee of $65 will also be paid separately. Students need to acquire their own equipment and supplies. This may include navy blue scrubs ($20), gym shoes, stethoscope and cuff ($38), gait belt ($12), and textbook ($45).

City College of Education, Inc.

The City College of Education specializes in Basic Nurse Assistant and Phlebotomy Technician career training programs. The college’s main goal is to be the premier provider of healthcare education in the state of Illinois. City College aims to achieve this through strongly-structured programs that are delivered in non-traditional and educationally diverse instruction.

The City College’s Basic Nurse Assistant program is designed to prepare students for employment. Students would receive theory and practical skills experience in topics like basic patient care, anatomy, and other topics included in the state-mandated curriculum.

The program duration is six weeks with a total of 144 clock hours. Classroom lecture would be for 96 hours and clinicals would be for 44 hours. There are day and evening class options. Day classes are from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The schedule for evening classes are on the same days but from 4:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Clinicals are held every other Saturday for the first five weeks and from Monday to Saturday on the sixth week of the program. The schedule would be the same from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

An admission in an Associate Degree in Nursing is a prerequisite for the Basic Nurse Assistant program. Applicants should also be at least 18 years old, must at least have a high school diploma or GED certificate, must be a US citizen or have residency, must have a social security number, proficient in English and must be physically able to perform the necessary tasks.

The total program cost is about $929. This includes the $400 tuition fee, $50 registration fee, $60 for the books, $55 for materials including the uniform, $199 laboratory fees, $100 for miscellaneous supplies and $65 state certification exam fees.

Divine Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program, Inc.

Divine BNATP is approved by the IDPH as a CNA training provider. The privately-owned training center was opened in 2013 and was approved for operation by the Illinois Board of Higher Education – Private Business and Vocational Schools Division. Owned by a nurse, Divine BNATP, Inc. aims for individuals to have an opportunity to enter into the healthcare industry, especially as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

The program is length is six weeks for a total of 132 contact hours. About 80 hours will be dedicated to theory classes, 40 for clinicals, and 12 hours for Alzheimer’s Disease and CPR training. The class meets Monday through Friday (no Wednesdays) from 4:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Fees and expenses include $900 for tuition, $60 for textbook rent, $30 for a stethoscope, $40 for uniform, $100 for health tests (Hepatitis B and TB), $40 for background check/fingerprinting, and $65 for the state certification exam. The cost of the stethoscope, uniform, and health tests are just estimates and can vary depending on where students procure the said items.

First Step to Excellence Healthcare Training Academy

FSTE Healthcare Training Academy provides quality healthcare career training programs with an emphasis on knowledge and skill acquisition. FSTE training curriculum is designed to encourage personal accountability among students, following the school’s core principles of basic human need, integrity, professionalism, caring, protection of resident rights.

FSTE’s Basic Nurse Assistant training program covers the basic principles and procedures for long-term care in different healthcare settings. The program would be delivered through classroom lecture, supervised laboratory exercises, and hands-on clinical experience.

The program is for six weeks for 120 contact hours. About 80 hours would be dedicated to theory classes and 40 hours for the clinical experience. Day and evening class schedules are available. The theory is held Monday to Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. or from 5:00 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Clinicals are either on Thursdays or Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Class size is limited to 20 students per class.

Applicants need to be at least 16 years old and present a valid high school diploma/GED certificate and transcripts, state-issued ID, negative drug screening result, healthcare worker background check, medical history and a physical exam, proof of health insurance, and a passing score on the basic math and reading comprehension placement test.

The tuition fee is $850 with a $100 non-refundable registration fee. There are additional expenses for the background check ($37), drug screening ($25), and the state certification exam ($67). FSTE accepts WIOA and CEDA vouchers. There are payment plans available.

Great Paragon Healthcare, Inc.

Great Paragon Healthcare, Inc. is a home healthcare agency in Chicago. The agency provides both medical and non-medical home aide to clients. Great Paragon is also an approved CNA and LPN training provider to augment their staff and registry of healthcare professionals. Aside from that, Great Paragon also offers continuing education courses in English (ENG 101), Mathematics (MTH 110), medical terminology, and pharmacology.

Requirements include a Social Security Card, state-issued ID or driver’s license, high school diploma/GED certificate or any equivalent certifications. The tuition fee is $500 with a $100 non-refundable registration fee. There are additional expenses for the textbook ($85), uniform ($35), CPR card ($50), and stethoscope ($25). The cost may vary according to where students acquire these supplies. Students also need to pay out-of-pocket the fees for the state certification exam ($65), for the background check ($40), and fees for the physical exams.

Magnificent Health Care & CPR Inc.

MHC CPR primarily provides CPR and First Aid certification. The training facility’s Nursing Assistant program is designed to prepare students for providing basic care in acute care or long-term care settings. MHC CPR follows the state-mandated curriculum for CNA training and prepares students for both the written and skills component of the state certification exam.

The program length is five weeks. The course requires student attendance of 93 hours of theory classes and 40 hours of clinical experience. In order to pass the course, students need to correctly demonstrate 21 manual care skills. These skills may include care tasks like transferring patients from the bed to a wheelchair, mobility and motion exercise assistance, hygiene tasks assistance, feeding, and basic housekeeping. Students also need to master CNA skills like taking and recording temperature, blood pressure, and other vital signs measurements.

Classroom lecture and laboratory sessions meet Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Clinicals are either on Tuesdays or Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Applicants without a high school diploma or GED certificate need to score at least 64 in the English/Reading placement test and 60 in the mathematics placement test. This should be after only two attempts.

The tuition fee is $650. There is also a $100 non-refundable registration fee and $100 fee for books. There are other expenses amounting to $50. This is excluding the state certification exam fees.

Phalanx Family Services

Phalanx Family Services was founded in 2003, providing workforce development solutions and social services for disadvantaged children and families. The main goal of the members of the Phalanx group is to build lift up families and encourage them to become self-sufficient and active members of the local community.

Phalanx’ BNA training course combines basic nursing competencies with new developments in patient care. The course goes beyond the minimum requirements mandated by the state. There will be a separate Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers and First Aid training, topics like anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology would be more comprehensive.

The program is for eight weeks for a total of 146 clock hours. Classroom lecture and laboratory exercises would be for 106 hours while clinical experience would make up 40 hours. There is only three days’ worth of classes per weekday. The schedule would be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Clinicals would be held at the Advocate Trinity Hospital. Students would be assigned a day for the clinicals but the hours would remain from 7:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Applicants need to pass pre-screenings and pretests. They need to score at least 9.0 in the reading and 8.0 in the mathematics placement test. There will be a background check, physical examination, and a drug test.

The tuition fee is $445 with a non-refundable registration fee of $75. Books and supplies cost $210. There are miscellaneous expenses of $92.50 and other expenses of $113 for a total cost of $935.50.

There will be career development workshops integrated into the course. These workshops would help students prepare for employment.

Polish American Association – Education Department

The Polish American Association (PAA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1922. The PAA is the only organization in the US that provides comprehensive services for the Polish community. There are 28 programs and services available in the PAA including education and career training programs.

PAA has a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) & Health Care Resource Training Programs under its Education Department. The CNA program is focused on the basic patient care and is taught by Registered Nurses (RN). Graduates of the CNA program can also avail of PAA’s Health Care Resource Training Program where they can avail of Physical Rehabilitation Aide (PRA) with CPR training. The CNA program length is 14 weeks for a total of 150 hours. Classroom lecture would be for 100 hours while clinical experience will be for 50 hours.

There are free CNA classes available. Applicants just need to pass the income and residency requirements. They either need to have low-income status and live in-state or have low-to-moderate income status and live in Chicago. Aside from that, they also need to be at least 18 years old and pass other state requirements for the program. These requirements include a valid ID/Social Security card, criminal background check, English skills test, physical exam, and authorization to work in the US.

Textbooks and materials will be supplied for free for those who qualify. Those who won’t qualify will need to pay the $850 program cost.

PAA provides job placement assistance with employment follow-ups until after 90 days of employment.

The Nirvana Institute

The Nirvana Institute is considered as the premier nursing school in Chicagoland. The school has two campuses, one in S. King Drive (South Campus) and the other in W. Madison Street (West Campus). Both campuses offer Basic Nurse Assistant – CNA and Phlebotomy Tech classes.

The CNA classes are taught by Registered Nurses (RN) and are approved by the IBHE, IDPH, NHA, with a certification from WIA. The program length is only five weeks (25 days). Classes on the South Campus meet Monday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. West campus classes meet on the same days but from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 4:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The schedule for clinicals in both campuses is the same, either on Fridays or Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. New classes form every month and registration opens a month before classes begin.

Applicants only need to bring a state-issued ID or a driver’s license during the registration process. The total cost of the program is $1,000. This already includes the $650 tuition fee, $150 non-refundable registration fee, books, uniforms and other materials needed for classes. Students can pay $350 upfront during the registration and pay the remaining balance according to the available payment plans. There is no financial aid available for this course.

Tukiendorf Training Institute

The Tukiendorf Training Institute or TTi Medical Training offers in-demand healthcare career certification courses. These courses are always monitored for quality and updated by instructors and specialists in the medical field. The TTi’s basic CNA training program will prepare students for the state certification exam and in performing tasks as a CNA. TTi has a zero-absence policy. Students need to complete 90 hours of classroom lecture and 45 hours of clinical experience. Students that are unsure of their capability to pass the state certification exam can repeat the course at no additional cost.

There are three class options: mornings, evenings and weekends. Morning classes meet Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Evening classes meet Monday to Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Weekend classes meet on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. These schedules are subject to change and only one class option may be available at a time.

In order to be accepted for admission, applicants need to present a proof of high school graduation (high school diploma/GED), pass a national-level background check, comply with Centers for Disease and Control guidelines for vaccinations, complete a physical exam with two-step TB skin test, and current evaluation of physical capability to participate in the program especially the clinical exercises.

The program costs about $1,915. This already includes the tuition fee, books, state certification exam fee, and other fees associated with the program. There are additional expenses including a background check ($31.95), a physical exam with a TB test ($100), uniforms ($100), and supplies ($95).
